The Cabinet has given its nod to the adoption of GCC standard specifications and technical regulations by Qatar.
The decision was taken at the Cabinet’s ordinary meeting chaired by HE the Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al-Thani at the Emiri Diwan yesterday.
The meeting approved decisions of HE the Minister of Municipality and Environment, and related projects, pertaining to the adoption of Gulf standard specifications as Qatari standard specifications as well as the adoption of Gulf technical regulations as Qatari technical regulations, the official Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported.
The GCC Standardisation Organisation (GSO), with the membership of Qatar and the other Gulf states, aims to help the GCC countries achieve the objectives set forth in its charter and in the GCC Economic Agreement by unifying the various standardisation activities. It also stresses on co-ordination with standardisation bodies in the member states for implementation of the adopted measures, according to the GSO website.
“This is an endeavour to develop the production and service sectors, foster intra-GCC trade, protect the consumer, environment and public health, and encourage GCC industries and agricultural production that will help enhance the Gulf economy, sustain the achievements of the member states and minimise technical trade barriers as envisaged by the objectives of the Customs Union.”
Meanwhile, following yesterday’s meeting, HE the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Ahmed bin Abdullah bin Zaid al-Mahmoud said the Cabinet approved a draft resolution to set up a committee to co-ordinate search and rescue operations pertaining to civil aviation.
Under the resolution, the committee will be established at the Civil Aviation Authority and chaired by the authority’s president. It will have, as members, representatives of the authorities concerned.
The committee will have a number of specialisations, which include studying the ways in which issues monitored by the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s inspection team are to be addressed in accordance with international standards and national regulations, according to the QNA report.
The Cabinet also reviewed some topics and took the appropriate decisions.
These include a draft law on the protection of the Arabic language; the memorandum of HE the Minister of Administrative Development and Labour and Social Affairs on the outcome of the 15th meeting of ministers and presidents of civil service and administrative development in the Gulf Co-operation Council countries in Riyadh in September 2016; and the memorandum of HE the Minister of Public Health on the outcome of the fifth replenishment conference of the global fund to fight certain diseases in Montreal in September 2016.
