Qatar’s Foreign Minister HE Sheikh Mohamed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani has called for an immediate ceasefire in Syria and return to the negotiating table, stressing that a political solution is the only way to resolve the crisis.
He was speaking at a joint press conference with US Secretary of State John Kerry, French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault, and the German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, after the ministerial meeting on Syria in Paris yesterday.
HE the Foreign Minister reiterated Qatar’s commitment to fighting terrorism in Syria, stressing “the need to consider the humanitarian situation of brethren in Aleppo and all other Syrian cities”. He noted that the human factor should not be a bargaining chip to get a military or political gains.
He said that what is happening in Aleppo tantamount to a war crime, as the city still being bombarded by explosive and chemical weapons, adding that “the regime had not been punished in the past and therefore it is indifferent about accountability in the current time, and it continues political siege and starvation.”
HE the Foreign Minister said: “The ministerial meeting discussed the Syrian opposition’s commitment represented by the President of the Supreme Commission for negotiations to fight terrorism and terrorist organisations, such as IS (Daesh) and Al Nusrah”.
He added that these organisations were a result of terrorism of the Syrian regime and the sectarian militias that were fighting with it.
