The Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences (DBES) at Qatar University’s College of Arts and Sciences (QU-CAS) recently held the third annual ‘Support, Opportunity, Success’ symposium, aimed at promoting the college’s graduate programmes.
The event, in collaboration with Katara Hospitality, also aims to facilitate networking and “cross-disciplinary thinking” among students, faculty and stakeholders. It engages stakeholders with their potential employees by integrating their activities in DBES teaching and research approach.
Attendees included representatives from QU Centre for Humanities and Social Sciences, Environmental Science Centre, Laboratory Animal Research Centre, Hamad International Airport, Oryx GTL, Suez Environment SA and Total Research Centre-Qatar.
“The event highlights the spirit of collaboration between academia and industry in Qatar, and serves as a platform to exchange knowledge and best practices that will be of invaluable benefit to our students,” CAS dean Dr Rashid al-Kuwari said.
He noted that the symposium also demonstrates CAS’ efforts to promote professional development and employability among students by providing them with training and internship opportunities that help them identify their career pathways and develop their skills and capabilities to match labour market needs.
DBES department head Dr Fatima Ammar al-Naemi echoed the statement of al-Kuwari, saying they want to strengthen its academic and research collaborations to advance its graduate programmes.
These include Master of Environmental Science and PhD in Biological and Environmental Sciences, which are recognised for achieving highly international standards and are especially tailored to meet local needs.
Meanwhile, Katara Hospitality has put in place a comprehensive and integrated approach to build on its established infrastructure and address crucial issues related to environment, community, workplaces and product development, according to its Human Resources assistant manager Asma al-Hajri.
Other attendees of the event included CAS associate deans for Research and Graduate Studies Dr Hala al-Essa, for Academic Affairs Dr Hassan Abdul Aziz and for Student Affairs Dr Yasser Hussein; Katara Hospitality chief corporate services officer Salem al-Kubaisi, CAS faculty, students and staff.
