The Blackhawks defeated the Stars 4-3 in overtime in the teams’ second game in as many days.
Marian Hossa scored with 28.7 seconds left in overtime on a shot from the points for the winner.
The Hawks suffered an injury during the second period when winger Tyler Motte went crashing into the board in an awkward fashion after fighting for the puck with Stars center Radek Faksa.
Motte was slow to get up but he did get up on his own power. However, he could not apply pressure to his left leg as he exited for the dressing room. The Hawks announced Motte would not return.
The Hawks played a sluggish first period and squandered two power plays while the Stars took advantage of theirs.
Tyler Seguin put home a shot from in close on goaltender Scott Darling for a 1-0 lead at 15:34.
The Hawks were outshot again in the first period despite their two power plays 10-7.
The Hawks’ woeful power play continued in the second period as the Stars extended their lead thanks to a shorthanded goal from Gemel Smith at 8:29.
The Hawks got one back thanks to a goal from Patrick Kane who slipped behind the defense and scored off a feed from Jonathan Toews. It was Kane’s fifth goal of the season.
The Hawks poured it on to start the third period scoring two quick goals and oddly, both came during 4-on-4 play.
With Antoine Roussel and Patrick Kane in the box, the Hawks tied the score when Marian Hossa delivered a perfect pass to a streaking Jonathan Toews, who finished the goal at 3:39. Then just 56 seconds later, Toews tried to get a pass to Artem Anisimov. The puck was deflected, but Anisimov was in perfect position to clean up the rebound for the goal at 4:35.
Smith, however, tied the score 3-3 late with a redirected goal at 18:40 to send the game into overtime. Forward Andrew Desjardins was healthy enough to play for the first time this season, but Desjardins was a healthy scratch. Quenneville wanted to keep the same lineup he had Saturday.
Quenneville also added that defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk skated Sunday for the first time since suffering a right arm injury on October 21.
Van Riemsdyk’s original timetable for return was a month.
