Qatar was voted for the fourth consecutive time to the UN International Law Commission (ILC).
Qatar’s candidate HE Dr Ali bin Fetais al-Marri, the public prosecutor and the UN special lawyer on anti-corruption, was re-elected in the secret ballot that the UN General Assembly held to choose 34 members of ILC on the sidelines of the 71st session.
Al-Marri secured 128 votes out of a possible 193 votes to carry on his membership of ILC. He was first elected in 2002.
Also in the race were Japan, China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Iran, South Korea, Vietnam, Jordan and India.
The Foreign Ministry and the permanent delegation to the UN in New York exerted huge efforts to garner support for the Qatari candidate, with the victory reflecting the high-level diplomatic co-ordination.
