An operational agreement between the Penal and Correctional Institutions Department (PCID) and Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) - Imdad 2 –has been renewed, the Ministry of Interior (MoI) said.
The agreement was signed by Brigadier Mohamed Abdullah al-Ahmad, assistant director, PCID, and Fahad Mohamed Saad al-Naimi, executive
director, QRCS.
Present on the occasion were Saad Salim al-Dousari, assistant director of the Human Rights Department; Mohamed al-Ansari, assistant director of Qatar Technical School; and Lt Colonel Jassim Mohamed al-Kaabi, head of the Care and Rehabilitation Section at PCID.
The initiative, sponsored by the Sports and Social Activities Support Fund and Qatar Technical School, is aimed at training inmates of penal and correctional institutions - through workshops - in electrical wiring, welding, formation of solar cells, air-conditioning and refrigeration, according to the MoI statement.
Brigadier al-Ahmad said that the new agreement guarantees an opportunity for the trainees to get an accredited certificate from Qatar Technical School, while “incentive salaries” have been allocated for inmates to attend training programmes in order to help them cope with their needs. These measures will help the programme achieve its objectives of preventing inmates from returning to crime once they are released, it is observed.
The agreement also provides for care to the families of inmates along with material support, counselling and psycho-social advice. Further, it includes the provision of aftercare for inmates upon their release and during their quest to find suitable jobs and start small projects in the future.
