German Chancellor Angela Merkel said yesterday that she laments the fact that Christmas carols are no longer sung at her Christian Democrats’ (CDU) annual Christmas parties.
“We are the party with the ‘c’ in its name,” Merkel said during a CDU party conference in the eastern town of Wittenberg, alluding to the fact that the CDU should hold tight to its Christian roots.
“What are we teaching our children and grandchildren? I’m quite serious about this,” Merkel told fellow party members, who burst into laughter.
Merkel suggested handing out sheet music and finding someone to accompany the carollers with a recorder.
