The Ministry of Municipality and Environment’s (MME) agriculture quarantine offices at the various ports inspected 5,815 imported cargoes of agriculture produce weighing around 72,644 tonnes last month.
Of these, 167 cargoes, weighing around 354 tonnes were destroyed for violating the agriculture quarantine law and regulations, and being infested with bugs.
In addition, five cargoes comprising 49.5 tonnes of agriculture products exported outside the country were inspected by the agriculture quarantine offices. Botanical health certificates were issued to these as well.
Agriculture Quarantine is the main defence line against bugs and diseases and mainly aims at protecting the plants in the country against infestation by from various bugs.
