The Ministry of Economy and Commerce has fined a retailer complex for displaying a popular local brand of tomato, pictured,  in the area designated for goods imported by air.
The punishment was for violating the provisions of Article No 7 of Law No 8 of 2008 on Consumer Protection and combating commercial fraud.
The retailer also had to sign a pledge to ensure it will abide by the laws for Consumer Protection.
Violation of Consumer Protection Law can result in closure of outlet and fines ranging from QR3,000 to QR1mn.
The MEC had earlier urged all retailers and suppliers to separate the displayed local vegetables and fruits from the imported goods by air to ensure that the consumers are fully aware of the type of displayed product in all retailers.
