The committee for naming streets, neighbourhoods and public squares at the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) has accomplished the process of naming more than 6,683 streets around the country since the beginning of this year until now.
Besides, the names of 53 streets, roads and squares at Musheireb Area and 37 streets at Pearl Qatar have been approved.
The committee was established according to Cabinet Decision No 17 for 2003, and its members included three representatives of the Ministry of Municipality and Environment, including the chairman and vice chairman, a representative each from the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, the Ministry of Culture and Sports, and the Public Works Authority (Ashghal), two representatives from the members of the Central Municipal Council, and two other members from the private sector.
The committee is tasked with suggesting the names of streets and areas and reviewing the existing ones when necessary.
The committee also gives opinion on the names suggested by people and official entities. It has adopted a standard mechanism for selecting the new names giving priority to the already well-known geographical names in the country, and to perpetuate them.
Old and heritage names are also among the priorities including the names of influential and distinguished characters in the designated area that had played a key role in their development.
The committee makes sure that the adopted names are written as they are pronounced in the common Qatari dialect. Every name should have a clear meaning and well-established roots in the local traditions and history based on the information and testimony of senior and old locals living in the area or street to be named, according to the official.
