Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe making a clarification of the preliminary conditions of establishing the Port City with China.
He said the government agreed to resume the project following the approval of the environmental report and the agreement by the Chinese company not to purchase land. Responding to JVP parliamentarian Bimal Ratnayake in parliament yesterday, the prime minister said that it is important to obtain an environment friendly clearance certificate to establish a trade and finance city in the port area, ColomboPage online newspaper reported.
He also noted that the Finance City was earlier planned for construction in the Welikada Prison area and Ratmalana. But the present area of the port city is comparatively larger to establish the Finance City.
The prime minister said a South Asian branch of a Chinese bank will be established in this area. He said China agreed to set up the branch in Colombo at the proposed Finance City. He said the concept paper and proposal for the Finance City is being discussed and it could be revealed before the end of this year.
