Jassim Ghazali picked up three wins on the penultimate day of the 2015-16 season in Doha, including The Late Sheikh Mubarak bin Abdulrahman al-Thani Cup, the highlight of the seven-race card at the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club yesterday.

Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club general manager Nasser Sherida al-Kaabi presents a memento to Sheikh Nasser bin Mubarak al-Thani.

The win for Al Hareth, ridden by Richard Mullen in the colours of Mishal bin Ali al-Attiyah, in the seven furlong run on the turf of the Al Rayyan race track was the second consecutive and fourth in the entire season for the son of Seas Legacy. The win also got champion trainer Ghazali closer to the century mark for the season at 97 wins.
The conditions race for local thoroughbreds began with Al Mansoor, JP Guillambert astride, and Al Mazrooah, under Tadgh O’Shea, jostling for early lead.

Richard Mullen rides Al Hareth to victory in The Late Sheikh Mubarak bin Abdulrahman al-Thani Cup at the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club yesterday.

Moving into the final bend, on to the straight, Mullen got Al Hareth to steadily move forward on the outside. With a furlong and a half to go, Al Hareth was alongside Al Mazrooah, who just wasn’t a match for Al Hareth’s turn of foot in the final metres of the race. Al Hareth hit the post five lengths ahead of Al Mazrooah, with Footprintinthesand, saddled by Ahmed Kobeissi and ridden by Darren Williams, finishing third.
Earlier in the day, Izzthatright, winner of the Group 3 Katara Sprint Cup, part of the HH The Emir’s Sword meeting, edged out another Ghazali charge My Sharona by one and a half lengths over six furlongs to win the Class 2 Thoroughbred Conditions event. Mullen was at the helm of Izzthatright.
Majed Seifeddine-saddled Qatar Light completed the top three.
The 2016 Al Biddah Mile winner, Opera Baron, gave champion trainer Ghazali his first win of the day, when JP Guillambert rode the three-year-old gelding to a victory in the Class 5 Thoroughbred Conditions event.
Opera Baron, being ridden in the colours of Khalifa bin Sheail al-Kuwari, edged out Mohamed Hussain-saddled Gerrard’s Quest at the post, with Majed Seifeddine’s charge Binzart was third under Adnan Hawa.
Meqdam Al Zaidy continued his impressive run this season when Ibrahim al-Malki schooled horse won for the fourth time out of six since January yesterday. In the other two runs, he had finished an encouraging second and fourth.
Stephan Ladjadj, riding in the colours of Sheikh Faisal bin Hamad bin Jassim al-Thani, rode the six-year-old to a victory in the mile-long Purebred Arabian Handicap event for horses rated 60-90, with Mohamed Jassim Ghazali-trained fillies — Khalifa bin Sheail al-Kuwari-owned Lina Al Mels and Maryam bin Sheail al-Kuwari’s Mujahidah — rounding up the top three.
In the two maiden races for the day, Darren Williams rode Khor Al Adaid and Alberto Sanna guided Croara to victories in the Local Purebred Arabian Maiden Plate and Thoroughbred Maiden Plate events respectively.
Essa Mohamed al-Sulaiti-owned Amer colt shed his maiden status on his seventh career outing, and so did Stefano Ibido-trained thoroughbred filly Croara.
Also shedding her maiden status was Al Jalila, who was helmed by Cedric Segeon to her first career victory in the Purebred Arabian Handicap event for horses rated 60 and below.
Owned by Rashid Mohamed RA al-Athba and trained by Abduljabar Ali, Al Jalila pulled away from the rest of the field to finish a comfortable five lengths ahead of Secret Angel, ridden by Tadgh O’Shea in the colours of Maryam bint Sheail al-Kuwari, while Marvin Suerland guided Mohamed Hussain-saddled Shizam CS compelted the top three.
