The Bangladesh government expects to send some 1.5mn workers to Malaysia in three years under a new deal.
Bangladesh’s cabinet yesterday approved the “G2G (government-to-government) Plus” deal to pave the way to send 1.5mn workers to
Malaysia, Xinhua reported.
After the cabinet meeting, with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair, spokesman Shafiul Alam said the government hopes to send 1.5mn workers to Malaysia under this deal in the next three years.
He said Malaysia has listed Bangladesh as a source country. “It’s a great achievement for us.”
Under the new deal, Malaysia would recruit Bangladeshi workers in construction, service, manufacturing and agriculture sectors.
Alam said that workers would be sent from the registered list of the database of the Bureau of Manpower Employment and Training (BMET), and a major share of the migration cost would be borne by the employer.
He said that the migration cost would vary from 34,000 to 37,000 taka (($424 to $462.5).
He said the appointment letters of the workers would be attested by the Bangladesh High Commission in Malaysia and would also be kept there while there would be no scope for appointment letter replacement or duplication.
Alam said salaries of the workers would be directly sent to the bank accounts of the workers while a Joint Working Group (JWG) would be in place under the G2G Plus process to conduct joint monitoring to protect workers’ rights and their interests.
