The winners of the ninth edition of the annual research contest on drugs have been declared.

As part of the implementation of the third phase of the national strategy to combat drugs and ongoing preventive education programmes, the Permanent Committee for Drugs and Alcohol Affairs (PCDAA) organised a jury event for the contest conducted by the secondary school students union under the theme, Weqaya.

The jury was chaired by Dr Hissa Mohamed Sadiq, dean of Qatar University (QU)’s College of Education, and the members included Dr Asma Abdullah al-Atiyyah, head of the Department of Psychological Sciences at QU, and Dr Ahmad al-Saaei, faculty member.

Ahmad bin Mohamed al-Thani Independent Secondary School won the first place for the research presented by its students Hamad Abdul Majeed al-Yafie, Sohail Mohamed al-Riyachi and Ahmad Saif Shatnawi on the subject “Role of school in spreading awareness of the hazards of drugs among secondary school students”.  

Jassim bin Hamad Independent Secondary School finished second for the research done by student Abdul Aziz Ahmad Quwaider on the subject “Irresponsible impact of media in proliferation of drugs among youth”.

Al Zubarah Independent Secondary School for Boys won the third place for the research presented by Ahmad Jamal Farid and Amr Abdul Rauf on “Drugs proliferation factors and their hazards and the methods to save youth and society from them”. 

PCDAA secretary Ibrahim al-Somaih said the competition was aimed at involving students in efforts to raise awareness on the hazards of drugs and their harmful impact. A total of 71 research projects were presented in the competition, of which 10 were selected for the final round.

He further said the educational and cultural competition was held in accordance with directives to take all necessary measures for the propagation of cultural, legal and security awareness to address issues pertaining to drugs and psychotropic substances in order to save school students and implement the interim plans of the national strategy for combating drugs 2010/2015.

Dr Sadiq said they were delighted to co-operate with the PCDAA in organising the annual programme, stressing that research skills played an important role to prepare students for future university studies.

Winners of the painting contest for primary and preparatory students were also declared by a jury comprising Prof Salman Ibrahim al-Malik, Prof Abdullah Fazlullah al-Ansari and Prof Vad-ha Ali al-Sulaiti.

Aisha Mohamed al-Sulaiti of Nosaiba bint Kaab Independent Primary School for Girls won the first place at the primary level, while Mubarak Abbas al-Maas of Al Duhail Model Independent School for Boys came second and Ali Khalifa al-Ghanim of Arabian Gulf Independent Primary School finished third.

At the preparatory level, Ayisha Mansoor al-Noaimi of Al Bayan Independent Preparatory School for Girls, Saud Ali Abdullah al-Kaabi of Ahnaf bin Qais Independent Preparatory School for Boys and Abdul Rahman Ahmad al-Zaina of Ali bin Abu Talib Independent School for Boys won the first, second and third places, respectively.
