Claiming that people in Bangladesh are now in a panic over enforced disappearances, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson Khaleda Zia on Wednesday night urged people to unite to ensure the fall of the current ‘repressive’ government.

“People across the country are now in fear of getting killed and falling prey to enforced disappearance. No one is safe now. Parents, husbands, wives and relatives always remain in apprehension whether their near and dear ones will return home safely,” she said.

The BNP chief further said: “People now want a change in government. We must get unite forgetting differences and misunderstandings.”

Khaleda made the remarks while unveiling the cover of a book written on her eldest son and BNP senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman at her Gulshan office.

Bogra district BNP president Saiful Islam edited the book, titled Akutovoy Deshnayak (fearless statesman), marking Tarique’s 50th birth anniversary.

The 136-page book contains write-ups of BNP leaders and pro-BNP journalists and intellectuals praising Tarique Rahman.

Khaleda assured people that if her party returned to power they would restore good governance.

Slamming the government for what she said were its growing repressive acts, Khaleda alleged that this government has broken all previous records of corruption and repression.

The BNP Chairperson urged her party men to strengthen organisational activities at the grassroots level.

“Full-fledged committees will have to form at all levels, including all sub-districts and unions. It can’t be considered who is big and who is small. All must work together to make the party stronger,” she added.
