Former Maldives president Mohamed Nasheed’s office has released a statement stating British police have started investigating a death threat sent to him, local media reported yesterday.

Nasheed had lodged a complaint with British Metropolitan Police Services - Counter-terrorism Command, regarding a death threat sent via text message, during his visit to attend British Conservative Party conference, local media outlet Haveeru
reported.

The former Maldives president has alleged religious extremists were behind the threats. “Nasheed has, in a number of different occasions, expressed his concern over the increasing number of extremists in Maldives, and extremists using gangs in carrying out such crimes,” read the statement
released by his office.

The statement said the death threat had come after an office belonging to Nasheed’s party, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), as well as his private residence was
vandalised.

Such acts of terrorism cannot be ignored. Police have proved inept in protecting Maldivian citizens, read the statement.

The recent wave of death threats targeted some lawmakers, politicians and journalists in Maldives and police have insisted they are conducting
investigations.

Nasheed was the first democratically elected president of the Maldives but was controversially ousted from power in 2012 in what he has claimed as a coup.
