Pep Guardiola’s frustration was clear to see after Bayern Munich lost to VfL Wolfsburg on penalties in the German Super Cup, the curtain-raiser to the Bundesliga season where the league champions take on the German Cup holders.
Bundesliga champions Bayern have now lost three Super Cups in a row under Guardiola following defeats to Borussia Dortmund in 2013 and 2014.
“It’s not easy to win this trophy,” said Guardiola in the wake of Saturday’s defeat.
“We created enough chances to win but we just have to keep looking forward.”
The defeat led to renewed questions about whether Guardiola, whose contract runs out at the end of the upcoming season, will remain at Bayern long enough to finally secure a Super Cup crown.
“Next question,” was his curt response when the query was posed.
Reports in the British Sun newspaper claim Manchester City are preparing a 100-million-euro offer for Guardiola’s services and until the Spaniard confirms where his future lies speculation about his intentions is bound to continue.
“The players aren’t discussing Guardiola’s future,” said Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.
“The decision will be made at some point, whether it happens before or after the winter break has no influence on the players.”
German Cup holders VfL Wolfsburg lifted the German Super Cup for the first time in the club’s history following a penalty shoot-out after the match finished level at 1-1.
An Arjen Robben strike three minutes into the second half looked to have secured victory for Bayern but substitute Nicklas Bendtner made it 1-1 for Wolfsburg one minute from time to send the match into a shoot-out.
Koen Casteels saved Bayern’s second penalty from Xabi Alonso while Wolfsburg scored all five of theirs with Bendtner the last man to step forward, blasting home his effort to secure the 5-4 victory on penalties.

Bad defending
“It’s a pity that we weren’t able to defend properly in the final minutes,” said Guardiola.
“Football is like that, things can change from minute to minute. The match then ended in a draw and it went to a penalty shoot-out.”
The shoot-out loss follows Bayern’s defeat to Dortmund in the semi-final of last season’s German Cup in the same way.
On the positive side, Guardiola welcomed back Robben from a long-term injury while new signing Douglas Costa impressed on his competitive debut two weeks ahead of the Bundesliga season.
Arturo Vidal, who cost 37 million euros from Italian champions Juventus, also played for the final 15 minutes and converted his penalty in the shootout.
