Serie A leaders Juventus crashed 2-1 against Torino in yesterday’s city derby, suffering a third defeat in the Serie A season but retaining a 14-point lead on Lazio.
The Rome side were held 1-1 at home to lowly Chievo, taking the lead from veteran Miroslav Klose but seeing Alberto Paloschi level for the guests.
Lazio, on 59 points from 32 games, are now one point ahead of Roma, who crashed 2-1 at Inter Milan Saturday, in the race to get direct access to the Champions League.
In Turin, Juve went ahead from a majestic free-kick by Andrea Pirlo on 35, but Torino levelled on 44 from Matteo Darmian’s break in the box. The turnaround was completed on 57 as ex-Juve striker Fabio Quagliarella bagged the winner.
Pirlo had sent another free-kick against the post before Quagliarella’s goal and Juve then failed to level despite the efforts of league top striker Carlos Tevez.
Torino last defeated Juve 20 years ago. They stayed level on 47 points with Genoa, who are seventh thanks to a better goal difference after winning 3-1 over Cesena.
“I was still in Castellamare (di Stabia) hoping to become a footballer (20 years ago),” Quagliarella said. “Today we wanted to win and I think that people enjoyed it.
“It was really a great derby. We will realize later on what happened because the joy is great after 20 years. My goal is dedicated to my relatives in the stands and to the fans.”
Verona won 3-2 against Sassuolo as veteran Luca Toni scored a brace to secure victory despite the first-half dismissal of his goalkeeper Rafael.
Beleaguered Parma stunned Palermo 1-0, but remain last on 16 points in the three-team drop zone with Cesena and Cagliari.
German Denis nodded home a last-gasp equalizer for Atalanta in a 2-2 draw against Empoli that saw veteran Massimo Maccarone deflect home for Empoli’s second lead on the hour after late first-half goals from his team-mate Riccardo Saponara and Atalanta’s Alejandro Gomez.
The Bergamo hosts move to 31 points from 32 games. They sit fourth-from-last with an eight-point buffer from the drop zone.  Empoli are on 35 with six games left.
Fiorentina v Cagliari and Napoli v Sampdoria complete a programme that began Saturday as Udinese beat AC Milan 2-1.
