Torrington Wallace Cox’s match-high effort of 35 points meant that Qatar Sports Club subdued Al Khor’s challenge 100-82 in the Qatar Basketball Cup at Al Gharafa Sports Club yesterday.
Khor was never able to wrestle away the lead from their opponents even as Cox was busy scoring 13 two-pointers, two three-pointers and three free throws.
Craig O’Brien Winder added to Cox’s tally with a 24 point effort while Mile Ilic, Mahmoud Ahmed and Jama al-Rahman were the other Qatar SC players to get into double figures. Ilic scored 16 points, Ahmed 12 and al-Rahman 10.
For Khor, Shavon Anthony Coleman was impressive with 31 points, which included 12 two-pointers, a three-pointer and four free-throws.
Mame Souleye Ndour added 24 points, while Kevin Kardell Bridgewaters scored 18 points.
Earlier, Devan Deangelo Downey scored a match-high 31 points to lead Al Gharafa to an 87-78 win over El Jaish.
Jaish started well taking a 4-2 lead in the first five minutes of the game but Downey, along with his four team-mates, each of whom played the entire 40 minutes, took the match away as it progressed.
Downey snapped up all of his nine two-pointers, apart from four three-pointers and a free throw for his 31-point effort.
Team-mate Samuel Monroe Jr. scored 21 points and notched up team-high 13 rebounds, while Emmanuel Adako pitched in with a 15-point effort. Abdulrahman Mohamed Saad and Omar Abdelkader Salem scored 10 points each.
Jaish played a total of seven players with Vernon Leon Macklin leading the scoring with 26 points. Macklin was ably supported by Shawn Taggart, who scored 24 points. Fadi Hani Abilmona was the other Jaish player to get into double figures with 14 points.
Tomorrow the action returns with two matches. Al Sadd take on Al Ahli at 5pm while Al Wakrah face off with Al Rayyan at 7pm.
