El Jaish scored a comfortable 98-77 win over Qatar Club in their opening match of the Qatar Cup at the Al Gharafa Indoor Hall yesterday.
El Jaish opened a six-point lead in the first period and after that the advantage just swelled by the end of fourth period. Shawn Larell top-scored with 26 points for El Jaish, followed by Vernon Leon (20) and Boney Harold (14).
El Jaish scored a whopping 21 points from turnovers as against Qatar Club’s seven. The winners also had 26 points off bench, while their rivals managed two. For Qatar Club, Craig O’Brien top-scored with 23 points, closely followed by Wallace Torrington (20) but they failed to get support from other players.
In another match, Al Shamal edged out Al Khor 77-71 to star their campaign on a winning note. Though Al Shamal had sneaked in early four-point lead, Al Khor were in the game right till the end.
It was more of a combined effort for Al Shamal which secured them a close win. Vincent Leron was the top-scorer for Al Shamal with 23 points and he was well-supported by Malcolm Anthony (19), Kosar al-Kader (15) and Rabiah Samer (14).
For the vanquished, Shavon Anthony was in his elements securing 25 points. Kevin Kardell (18) and Ahmed Hisham (15) also contributed for Al Shamal but their effort went in vain.
