Lekhwiya will aim to wrap up the Qatar Stars League (QSL) title when they take on Al Ahli at the Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium tomorrow.
With a key victory against Uzbekistan’s Bunyodkor in the Asian Champions League lifting their morale after a 3-3 draw with minnows Al Shahaniya delayed their QSL title party, Michael Laudrup’s boys will be in no mood for any further concessions when they meet sixth-placed Al Ahli.
However, Lekhwiya, who are looking for their fourth title in five years, will not have it easy because Al Ahli have proven they are no pushovers.
With their attacking style of play, Al Ahli have produced a few shocks this season, with wins over Al Jaish and Al Gharafa and an admirable draws against Al Sadd and even Lekhwiya.
On top of it they possess the league’s top scorer in Alain Dioko and a fast, counterattacking style. Also, Lekhwiya will be without the services of their captain Luiz Martin Junior who was sent off for a second bookable offense in their previous match.
Lekhwiya have 56 points from 24 matches, while Al Sadd are second with 51 from 24. If Lekhwiya lose tomorrow and Al Sadd beat El Jaish, the tournament will go down to the last day.
Additionally, if Lekhwiya lose and draw and Sadd win both their games, then the two teams would be tied on points and would have to play a “Golden Game” to decide the winner of the 2014/15 QSL season.
Meanwhile, Al Khor coach Laszlo Boloni was looking forward to gain three points when his team meet relegation-threatened Al Wakrah today.
“I hope that my players realize that we still have games before the holiday. We will enter the game to fight for the three points,” said Boloni
“It is difficult for our side to have concentration and motivation in the league now that we are safe (from relegation), but concentration must be ever-present, we are professional players.
“In this period of the season we have the option to change the team; I personally will try to push the young players and give them a chance and prepare for the next season.”
“This season, we had a difficult time. We started with a new team that grew into the season. We had our share of injuries and Sergine Abdul was out for 12 weeks. But considering these problems, I think the results up to now have not been bad.”
Al Wakrah head coach Goran Tufegdzic, however, has more to gain from the match
“This match is very important in Wakrah’s season. The squad is motivated. The maths is simple. We need to win to stay in the league. For now, we are above Shahaniya and we intend to win against Al Khor,” he said
“Our team will easily find motivation in this tie with Al Khor. Our squad is fit and ready we have no injuries for my side.”
Meanwhile, Al Arabi head coach José Daniel Carreno was aiming for a win against Al Sailiya.
“It’s an important game; We are looking to win against Al Sailiya. No absences in our side for this match,” Carreno said.
“Both teams have the same strengths. Al Sailiya are a good team tactically, and are coming into the match after a big win. We have to be aware of this.”
