After enjoying a historic streak, the Golden State Warriors’ run is done. Spaniard Marc Gasol scored 24 points, Zach Randolph added 17 with 10 rebounds and the Memphis Grizzlies snapped the Warriors’ franchise record, 16-game winning streak 105-98 on Tuesday, in a battle of the NBA’s best.
“We came into tonight playing against the team with the best record in the league and with two potential all-stars in Steph Curry and Klay Thompson,” Randolph said. “We were amped up; it was a hard-fought game, it was a team win.”
Mike Conley also netted 17 points while Vince Carter added 16 off the bench as Memphis (20-4) improved to a league-best 12-1 home mark with its fifth straight win overall.
“This win was huge,” Conley said. “Golden State has a great team and to come away with a win like that says a lot.”
Thompson tossed in 22 points, Curry had 19 on frosty 9-of-25 shooting while Marreese Speights added 18 for the Warriors (21-3), who lost for the first time since November 11 to San Antonio.
“We won 16 games in a row, and that doesn’t happen every day,” Warriors forward Draymond Green said after a four-point, 10-rebound outing. “It was a great streak but streaks are made to be broken.
“It was a tough one. I hate to lose and hate for the streak to end, but let’s start a new one.”
Memphis received big lift from veteran Carter, who buried three triples to fuel a 20-0 second-quarter blitz, helping the hosts to a 14-point cushion en route to a 57-49 half-time advantage.
“Once I got zoned in ... One went in and the second went in and I kind of found my rhythm,” Carter said.
Trailing by 14 early in the fourth quarter, Golden State stormed to within 90-88. Memphis, however, went on a 7-0 tear.
A Curry layup put the Warriors within 99-96 with 38 seconds remaining. But Conley flipped in a right-handed layup before Speights
knocked down a jumper with 25.3 ticks remaining
After Gasol made two free throws to make it 103-98 with 16 ticks left, Curry missed consecutive 3-pointers in the final 10 seconds and the streak was over.
“Even on a night when we’re not playing well, we found a way to get it to within two down the stretch against one of the best teams in the league on their home floor,” Warriors rookie coach Steve Kerr said. “It says a lot about our guys.”
Elsewhere, New Orleans forward Anthony Davis, playing with a protective jacket to shield bruised ribs that kept him out of the previous contest, scored a game-high 31 points to lead a comeback 119-111 victory.
The Pelicans trailed by 14 points early in the fourth quarter and had not won a game in eight previous attempts this season when losing at the final break.
However, Davis came alive down the stretch as the Pelicans out-scored the Jazz 41-22 in the fourth to seal the win.
Dallas placed five players in double figures, led by Dirk Nowitzki’s 16 points, to ease past New York 107-87.
Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony led the Knicks with 26 points and guard Tim Hardaway Jr added 14 but New York failed to score at least 100 points for the 21st time this season.
They are 3-11 at home and have lost by as many as 20 points on three occasions.
Guard John Wall had 21 points and 17 assists, and swingman Rasual Butler had 18 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter as Washington held off Minnesota 109-95.
Butler went 7-of-8 from the field in the final period with three three-pointers for the Wizards, who are winners of five in a row and nine of 10 overall.
Miami guard Dwyane Wade, who was a pre-game doubt due to an undisclosed illness, scored a game-high 28 points in a contest that was delayed for a half hour in the first quarter due to a leaky roof.
The Nets were led by center Mason Plumlee, who had a season-high 21 points.
