El Jaish maintained their third position in the Qatar Stars League with a 2-1 win over Qatar Sports Club in the QSL yesterday.

It was the third straight win for El Jaish who earlier defeated Al Ahli and Al Sailiya.

The 25-year-old Korean striker Cho Young-Cheol put Qatar Sports Club up in the 19th minute with a stunning free-kick. Cho sent the ball viciously dipping over Jaish’s three-man wall and goal-keeper Ahmed Abunora in the goal.

In a tame opening half, El Jaish captain Wissam Rizk wasted his team’s best scoring chance in the 17th minute when he blasted a right footer wide of the target from 10 metres.

After that the armymen produced successive goalmouth chances but the QSC defence held out.

The second-half had slightly more bite with the introduction of El Jaish’s Ghana-born Mohamed Muntari. The 20-year-old mid-fielder enlivened the encounter as he first cancelled Cho’s goal with a superb header in the 58th minute and two minutes later scored his fourth goal of the season to give his team a 2-1 lead with an assist from Hasan Magid.

QSC striker Kooky Yong blew a scoring chance in the 47th minute when his header sailed straight into the goalkeeper’s arms.
Some 15 minutes later, Cho swivelled on his right foot to shoot but the ball raced across the goal face.

These were the only genuine chances for the QNB Cup winner QSC until Hamdi Harbaoui missed a penalty in the 76th minute.

The fifth placed QSC, who defeated Al Sahaniya, Al Sailiya and Al Khor in the earlier matches, will now take on Shamal, while Jaish will meet Khor on Wednesday.
