Peter Barker of England earned his second consecutive Commonwealth Games squash singles bronze medal as he beat Sourav Ghosal for the sixth time out of six.

The Indian was distraught at the end with Barker sportingly consoling his opponent after a 11-5, 6-11, 11-5, 11-6 victory in 53 minutes.

Afterwards the third seed found it difficult to assess whether he was pleased with a bronze medal, with the disappointment of Sunday’s 11-8, 11-4, 11-5 defeat to compatriot Nick Matthew still fresh in his mind.

“I’m delighted to get another medal but obviously I wanted a different colour,” he said. “I’m very happy.

“He played really well in the second but I managed to pull away in the third game and that was the difference.

“I did not even know I had never lost to Sourav. It was hard to pick myself up after yesterday when I was absolutely devastated. I would have been even more devastated if I had lost this match.”

Ghosal was close to tears at the end after a gruelling match and was left drained at the end.

“I can be very proud of what I have done over the last few days as I have backed up some really good performances, only losing to James Willstrop and Peter,” he said. “All credit to them as they played extremely well on the day.

“I’ve given everything I had so I can be very proud of the effort but I wanted to win. That’s what you train so hard for. I’m really sad.

“Peter is a really good starter, I was hitting the ball well, but physically I was not strong enough. My body was more into it in the second game. The score doesn’t reflect how tight the points were.”

England are guaranteed all three medals in the men’s singles with top seed Matthew taking on second seed Willstrop later in the afternoon.
