Former Brazilian international footballer Fernando Lucio da Costa - better known as Fernandao - died yesterday in a helicopter crash.

His club SC Internacional said the 36-year-old died in a crash in the state of Goias.

Radio Gaucha reported that Fernandao was the only one of the five passengers who was still alive when rescue officials arrived at the scene of the crash. But he died on his way to hospital. Fernandao played for Olympique Marseille, SC Internacional and Sao Paulo and won the Copa Libertadores and FIFA club world championship with  Internacional.

He earned one cap for the Brazilian national team in 2005 and later served as director of sports and coach at SC Internacional.

“I regret the death of Fernandao, the idol of Internacional and all friends of football,” Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff said on Twitter.
