Manchester United produced a battling performance to draw 1-1 with Bayern Munich in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final yesterday while Atletico Madrid drew 1-1 at Barcelona.

Bayern had Bastian Schweinsteiger’s emphatic left-foot finish in the 67th minute to thank for securing a draw at Old Trafford after Nemanja Vidic headed United in front from a corner eight minutes earlier.

Bayern had dominated possession in the first half but United’s dogged defending prevented the guests creating clear chances. All too often the last pass was missing for Bayern, though David de Gea had to be athletic to tip away a shot from Arjen Robben on the half hour.

United had the best chance of the first half when Danny Welbeck pounced on a slip by Jerome Boateng but the striker’s audacious chip was palmed away by Manuel Neuer.

In Spain, Atletico Madrid opened the scoring when Diego collected a short free kick and thundered a tremendous shot into the top corner in the 56th minute.

Barcelona poured forward and secured a deserved 71st minute equaliser when Neymar curled home from Andres Iniesta’s neat pass which split open the defence.

The second legs in both ties take place on April 9. In the other quarter-final ties today, Paris St Germain host Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund travel to Real Madrid.
