The Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC), in co-operation with the Qatar Sailing and Rowing Federation, launched the registration process for participation in the second edition of the Traditional Boat Rowing Race (Al Shawaheef), which will be organised as part of the National Sport Day (NSD) celebrations on February 11.

The event, which includes a 3 km race on the Corniche seaside, will see participation from 10 teams of rowers.

Many valuable prizes totaling QR4,000,000 have been reserved for participants with the winning team set to receive QR 1,000,000.

The second team will receive QR 750,000, QR600,000 for the 3rd, QR500,000 for the 4th, QR400,000 for the 5th, QR300,000 for the 6th, QR 200,000 for the 7th, QR150,000 for the 8th, QR100,000 for the 9th and QR50,000 for the 10th team.

The supervising committee has already started preparations aimed at delivering a high class event which will take place in the afternoon of February 11, 2014, as part of the National Sport Day celebrations.

The race is scheduled to start at 3:30 PM at Sheraton Park and the route will head to Belhambar restaurant and back with a total distance of 3 km.

Through this event, the QOC aims to support community sports activities and to preserve the country’s heritage and traditions, so that the present generations keep up with their past.

The event also provides an opportunity to form a Qatari team, who would represent the country in competitions abroad.

The Organising Committee, who will be providing the boats, have set a number of terms and conditions for the candidates willing to take part in the race.

Each participating team should include 11 rowers, all of them being Qatari nationals. The minimum age of the participants should be of 16 years and they should be fit. The teams should be given the names of Qatari locations.

Among other conditions, the traditional boat (Shahoof) should not be altered externally. The boats will be allocated in a draw session and will be delivered along with the paddles and the team uniforms. No boats will be allowed to navigate near the race route for the safety of all.

It could also be found at the Organising Committee office in the 19th floor of the QOC tower. The deadline for the presentation of applications along with the caution will be three weeks before the date of the event.

Priority will be given to teams representing various areas of the country, then the university teams.

The race supervising Committee will approve the registrations after a co-ordination meeting with the participating teams, the officials and the administrative staff, in order to explain all the race relevant technical details and the regulations of the event.
