Morgan Pressel birdied the 18th from 12 feet to take a one-shot lead after the delayed third round of the weather-hit Women’s British Open at the Old Course, St Andrews, yesterday.

The American shot a one-under-par 71 for a nine-under 207 total and led by one stroke from compatriot Stacy Lewis, who had a 69 to go eight-under.

Saturday’s play had been hit by high winds—and only 11 players completed their rounds before play was suspended. Overnight leader Choi Na Yeon, from South Korea, did not hit a shot on Saturday and slipped to seven-under in a four-way tie for third place after a 75 on a day that was still breezy but made easier by overnight rain.

The biggest mover of the day was Scotland’s Catriona Matthew. The home favourite played two holes on Saturday—bogey, bogey.

But she came back 24 hours later and covered 16 holes in six-under par, finishing with a birdie at the 17th and then
holing out for an eagle two from 67 yards at the 18th.

The shot got the biggest cheer of the day.

A 68 for six-under left the 43-year-old just three off the lead, tied for seventh and in with a chance of repeating her 2009 victory at Royal Lytham and St Annes.

Park Inbee’s hopes of becoming the first golfer to win four majors in a year all but disappeared after a third round 74. The South Korean ended the penultimate round nine shots off the lead.

Another South Korean, Park Hee Young, was in a four-way tie for third, two shots off the lead, after signing for a third round 70.
