Mohammed Hamad al-Attiya trained Poyle Judy finished on powerfully in the hands of jockey Marvin Suerland to measure the front running Mallak in the closing stages of the race to win the 1,200 metres Umm Al Houl Cup, a race for Thoroughbreds rated 50 to 70, the feature event of yesterday’s races at the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club. Yes We Can Dream came on strongly along the rails to pip Mallak for the third place.

“She had a break of over a month since her last run as Poyle Judy had a minor setback. I was not sure she was one hundred percent ready, but the trainer has done a fantastic job with her. Though she was a bit lethargic at the start, Poyle Judy travelled so well at the 400 metres, that I had to pull her out and let her go. I was confident that she would win and she has justified the faith,” jockey Suerland told Gulf Times.

Mubarak al-Khayarin saddled Tawash shed his maiden status with an emphatic victory in the first division of the local bred Pure Arabian Maiden Plate. Jockey Andrew Elliot settled Tawash in second position till the final bend and thereafter the son of Al Muddafar smoothly accelerated and went away for a facile win. Barzan Al Uraiq, who chased the winner in the straight, was the best of the beaten brigade.

The second division of the local bred Pure Arabian Maiden Plate saw Alban de Mieulle trained Waddah record a pillar to post victory. Jockey Pier Convertino took the Nizam progeny to the front and set his own pace before changing gears in the straight. Intizaa came up with a spirited challenge but found the winner too good on the day. Ahmed al-Jehani schooled Chewdeh obliged after a few failures in the 1,200 metres Thoroughbred Handicap for horses rated 50 and below. Al Doha led the field into the straight but packed up under pressure. Chewdeh angled out from the rails and came up with a powerful burst to win the race quite easily. Late Debate finished on well to take the third place ahead of L’Immortel.

Zohair Moghsen saddled Albaasha finally entered the winners enclosure with a hard fought victory in the first division of the Thoroughbred Handicap for horses rated 50 to 70. Making his 11th appearance on the race track, Albaasha was ably ridden to victory by jockey Ali al-Showeikh. Inside who took over the running at the top of the straight, flattered to deceive as she did not have an answer to the onslaught launched by Albaasha who warmed up in nick of time, and overhauled the front runner with something to spare. Tex Mex came up with a long stretch run to snatch the third spot from Sworn, while Talkhees faded out after staying in touch with the front runners till the final 350 metres.

Earlier in the opening event of the day, Jassim al-Ghazali schooled Zajil Athba (Yanis Auoabed astride) floored the opposition in the 1,700 metres local Thoroughbred Maiden Plate. After loitering in mid bunch till turning for home, the daughter of Prince Of Andros produced a splendid burst of speed in the final furlong to get the measure of Amirat Al Qaloob to win quite comfortably.

The trainer and jockey combination of Ghazali and Auoabed completed a double for owner Khalid Yahya al-Khusail with a runaway victory on Ghalaa  in the second division of the Thoroughbred Handicap for horses rated 50 to 70. After racing a handy second till the home turn, Ghalaa sped away from the pack to win as she pleased. The winner clocked a smart timing of one minute 12.84 seconds, which was best timing recorded for the day. The manner of this victory suggests that the Ghazali trainee is capable of an encore when saddled next.

Jockey Stephen Ladjadj was able to extract a spirited run from Osama Omar al-Dhafa’s Barwa who managed to thwart the challenge of Qadeer and win the Pure Arabian Handicap for horses rated 40 and below, in a nail biting finish.
