Start of winter/shortest day of the year on Monday

The winter solstice will occur Monday, marking the shortest day of the year and the astronomical start of the winter season, the Qatar Met department has said.

The mercury levels will be around their regular average during this time of the year. The minimum temperature is expected to range between 15C and 18C and the maximum between 22C and 24C, the weather report states.

Today, the minimum and maximum temperatures in the country are likely to be 14C and 25C, respectively, with the forecast for Doha being 19C and 25C

Unstable weather conditions, including rain, are expected in the country from the evening of December 24 (Thursday) until December 27 (Sunday) due to the passage of a low-pressure system in the upper levels of the atmosphere, the Qatar Met department has said.

Skies will remain partly cloudy to cloudy and there is a forecast for isolated rain of varied intensity, reaching its peak on Friday and Saturday and becoming thundery at times.

The country is expected to be affected by an extension of a high-pressure ridge today and tomorrow, accompanied by moderate to fresh northwesterly winds, becoming strong at times over some areas. The wind speed will range from 15-23 knots and go up to 28 knots at times with a chance of blowing dust over open areas leading to a reduction in visibility to 3km or less, the weather report states.

The Met department has also warned of strong winds and high waves in offshore areas. The sea level is expected to range from 5-8ft, reaching 10ft at times.

The high pressure is expected to weaken on Wednesday, leading to reduced wind speeds.

The Met department has urged people to remain cautious during the weather fluctuations expected in the coming days and follow official weather updates and warnings through different social media channels.
