A Doha Criminal Court has sentenced an Arab expatriate to one year in jail for attempting to bribe a border officer to get out of the country illegally, local Arabic daily Arrayah has reported.

The court also fined him QR1,000. The man was trying to exit Abu Samra border post though he was banned from leaving the country by an official order due to a number of previous crimes.

A lieutenant officer at the post testified that information came through a secret source that a man would try to exit Abu Samra land post without proper documentation.

Further, a man approached the officer and informed that one of his relatives wanted to exit the country and would pay a sum of QR12,000 to facilitate the process.

The authorities instructed the officer to reach an agreement with the other party in order to hunt for the convict. It turned out then that the man who approached the officer was the person trying to escape. Accordingly, he was caught on the spot, the daily added.
