Qatar has won the membership of Unesco executive board for the next four years.
The voting on the membership took place during the 38th General Conference of Unesco which is currently under way in Paris.
Of the eight Arab countries which applied for the position, four states - Qatar, Oman, Lebanon and Sudan - won the membership.
In a statement to Qatar News Agency (QNA), Secretary General of Qatar National Committee for Education, Culture and Science, Dr Hamda Hassan al-Sulaiti said that the membership was the result of strenuous efforts by Qatari ministers, institutions and the office of the Unesco special envoy for basic and higher education HH Sheikha Moza bint Nasser.
Dr Hamda al-Sulaiti lauded the role of the Foreign Ministry, the Minister of Education and Higher Education and the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage which held a series of events that highlighted the modern renaissance of Qatar.
She also referred to the efforts of Qatar National Committee for Education, Culture and Science which contributed to Qatar's winning a majority of 121 votes out of 193.
Dr Hamda al-Sulaiti underlined that this step contributes to deepening relations between Qatar and other member-states of Unesco.
The executive board of Unesco comprises 50 states elected by the general conference. It prepares the agenda for sessions and discusses the organisation’s programme and budget estimates which is submitted by the director general to the general conference along with his appropriate recommendations. The executive board also elects Unesco director-general.
