The Health Control Section at Doha Municipality has stressed that it monitors the condition and quality of fish offered for sale in the Corniche fish market, through constant checks and inspections.

The market attracts a large number of customers, comprising both citizens and expatriates, during the weekend.

Dr Waleed al-Sayed, a food inspector, carries out a thorough check of the fish kept on all display tables to confirm that they are safe and fit for human consumption. He makes necessary remarks and issues warnings on matters such as the required quantity of ice and proper disposal of dead fish, among others, to ensure the safety of the public, according to a statement.

The inspector reports to the sale area during the working hours, which are from 7am to 1pm and from 4pm to 10pm. According to him, the number of customers is particularly high in the morning on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, while the demand is lower during the evening and on other days of the week.

On the issue of hygiene, Dr al-Sayed said he monitors the cleaning of display tables prior to and during transactions. Recently, as part of a collaboration between the Health Control Section and the Insect and Rodent Control Unit of the municipality, the fish shed was sprayed in order to keep flies at bay. Stickers were also put up for this purpose.

The market includes 29 display tables, of which 17 are currently in operation, he said, noting that co-operation and co-ordination are under way with the Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Economy & Commerce to run the fish shed.

The Health Control Section has said it is keen to implement health regulations at all fish selling facilities and food establishments within the framework of steps taken to guarantee the safety and health of consumers.
