Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar ( CMU-Q) welcomed the incoming first year class at a ceremony in Education City recently. The Class of 2019 is made up of more than 100 students, including the largest number of Qataris since CMU-Q opened its doors in 2004.
Convocation is a long-standing tradition that marks the beginning of the first-year class’s academic career at Carnegie Mellon. Dean Ilker Baybars, faculty and student representatives officially inaugurated new students into the Carnegie Mellon community of more than 13,000 students and 100,000 alumni worldwide.
“Carnegie Mellon’s success is founded on the core values of innovation, problem solving, hard work and collaboration upheld across our various disciplines. For the Class of 2019, the hard work starts now and we are confident that you’re ready, willing and able to walk the path that lays before you, because you chose Carnegie Mellon Qatar and we chose you,” dean Baybars said .
The incoming class also received words of welcome from Mohammed al-Hor, a junior in business administration and the president of the CMU-Q student body: “The community you’re about to enter is more than just a group of people from different backgrounds in the same university. Here we are a family of amazing people who share Carnegie Mellon’s distinctive approach to education and values while upholding our own individuality and creativity.”
CMU-Q offers five undergraduate degree programmes in business administration, biological sciences, computer science, computational biology and information systems, programmes that were selected for their specific relevance to human resource needs in Qatar and the region. The Class of 2019 is CMU-Q’s 12th incoming class.
