A Lower Court in Doha has sentenced four expatriates to jail terms for causing an explosion in a restaurant that claimed 11 lives in February last year.
While an Egyptian and an Indian were sentenced to five years in jail, two Turkish nationals were given two-year jail terms. The blast that ripped through Istanbul Restaurant, a Turkish eatery located in a petrol station complex next to Landmark Mall, also injured 35 people.
The Egyptian defendant had been serving as a supervisor of the company that connected the restaurant’s new gas line. The Indian, who worked at a supervisory level at Woqod, was convicted for failing in his duties to inform his company on the supply of gas to the restaurant.
The two Turkish men convicted in the case were the employees of the restaurant.
According to Doha News, in addition to jail time for the defendants, the court ordered blood money be paid to the relatives of the deceased, and compensation to the injured in amounts that varied from QR600 to QR12,000.
The four who were convicted had faced charges of involuntary manslaughter, involuntary/accidental harm and the damaging of property belonging to others.
