As part of its mission to spread safety awareness among expatriate workers, the Public Relations Department of the Ministry of Interior (MoI), in association with the General Directorate of Civil Defence (GDCD), is holding a three-day programme for workers of a leading construction and engineering company operating in Qatar.
MoI community outreach officer Faisal Hudawi addressed more than 200 workers of the company, Larsen & Toubro (L&T), on the first day of the programme yesterday at their accommodation in Workers’ City, located on the outskirts of the Industrial Area.
Officers from the MoI and Civil Defence will address more groups of L&T workers today and tomorrow.
This initiative is part of a series of awareness programmes aimed at raising awareness among the country’s workers.
Yesterday, the expatriate workers were informed about Qatar’s cultural traditions and the rules they need to follow in the country.
“It is being done as part of our efforts to make the workers familiar with the local cultural and religious traditions as well as to make them aware of the importance of safety and security, both at work and outside,” said Kaushik Banerjee, HR manager at L&T.
The official said the company would continue with its efforts to raise awareness on such issues among its workers.
Officials from the Traffic Department will speak on “pedestrian accidents and their reasons and remedies” today and tomorrow.
On the first day, an official from the Traffic Department explained the common errors committed by the country’s motorists and stressed the importance of avoiding such mistakes.
Meanwhile, officials from the GDCD yesterday demonstrated how residents should react if a fire broke out on their premises. The workers were also given training on the use of fire extinguishers and other safety equipment.
In addition, the adverse effects of consuming drugs and alcohol were explained to the workers.
L&T officials said their company has more than 4,000 workers in Qatar and another 3,000 are expected to join them in the coming months. “Currently, the company has expatriates from more than 12 countries and we understand the necessity of imparting proper safety and security lessons to our workforce,” said Banerji, explaining the reasons for the company’s co-operation with the MoI in holding such programmes.
