The Kahramaa Awareness Park is scheduled to open by the end of this year, a senior official has said.
Saleh Hamad al-Marri, head of renewable energy technologies at Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa), said this at Expo Milano 2015, while speaking at the Qatar pavilion as part of a three-day forum on renewable energy.
The Awareness Park will highlight the history of water and electricity generation in Qatar, the means of conservation and alternative sources of energy.
The official also stressed that Kahramaa was working on a project that envisaged production of electricity from solar energy over eight years.
He said the project aims to reduce harmful CO2 emissions and will see the utilisation of spaces on top of power stations and water tanks to harness solar energy and produce a targeted 200mw of electricity, eventually providing for 2% of Qatar’s energy needs.
Besides, it was observed, Kahramaa has a rationalisation and efficiency programme that aims to reduce individual consumption by 20% (electricity) and 25% (water) over the coming five years. In addition, Kahramaa has adopted various campaigns and initiatives to raise consumer awareness on the importance of using water and electricity
rationally.
Al-Marri also spoke about the concept of smart networks, which involve the supply of electricity based on the need, thereby saving time and effort in terms of both renewable and
traditional energy resources.
There is also an ongoing project for the construction of huge water reservoirs that will guarantee uninterrupted supply of water, including in emergencies.
Al-Marri affirmed that an effective saving of QR600mn has been achieved over the past two years through a decreasing dependence on the use of gas to produce water and electricity.
Expo Milan 2015 is being held under the theme “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life” in the Italian city of Milan until October 31.
The Qatar pavilion has hosted a number of forums as well as celebrations and art exhibitions for three days to mark Eid al-Fitr. The celebrations had a special focus on Qatar’s heritage and traditions and attracted several visitors.
