Three Asian expatriates sentenced to jail for circulating fake currency
A Doha Criminal Court has sentenced three Asian expatriates, including a woman, to five years in jail and a fine of QR5,000 for circulating counterfeit currency of a Gulf country, local Arabic daily Al-Sharq  reported yesterday.
A number of shops around Doha reported that a woman in Gulf attire and speaking Arabic gave them a 500 Dirham note, the currency of  a Gulf country, claiming she did not have adequate Qatari currency to pay for her purchases, which were often less than QR100.
They shopkeepers accepted the note and gave her change after deducting the value of her purchases, only to discover later that they were duped. Investigations confirmed the incidents and the reports of the forensic lab confirmed that the currency used was fake. Eventually, the three culprits were arrested and the court established their guilt, the daily added.

Doha court reviews shoplifting case
A Doha Criminal Court is reviewing a case of a young man accused of shoplifting, local Arabic daily Arrayah has reported.
The defendant’s lawyer has argued that his client suffers from kleptomania, which makes him lift items from shops regardless of his actual need or their value and it is hard for him to resist the urge.
The defendant, who is a university student, was arrested after he was repeatedly spotted taking small items from a shopping centre and leaving without paying. He continued to do so even after being warned by the management not to repeat the act. They then contacted the police and he was arrested.
It later came to light that the man had been accused in 11 similar cases earlier. While seven of these are still pending, he got jail terms in the other four, with one of them being a suspended sentence. He had already been jailed for three months for a similar theft and started stealing again shortly after his release.
His lawyer submitted a medical report on his condition and argued that the items he was accused or convicted of stealing were of no value to him. The lawyer accordingly requested that his client be referred to a specialised clinic for proper treatment, as giving him a prison term would only worsen his condition.
