A Doha Criminal Court has sentenced two senior officials of Qatar Foundation to five years in jail each, dismissal from their posts and a fine of QR3mn, which they would have to pay jointly, local Arabic daily Arrayah reported yesterday.
The two defendants were convicted of demanding and accepting a bribe of QR3mn from a foreign insurance company to renew the health and life insurance policy of their organisation. The case goes back when the manager of the insurance company reported to the officials that the defendants demanded a bribe of QR3mn to renew the contract.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) asked the manager to go through the process with the defendants and provided him with a hidden camera to record their meetings and negotiations on the issue. After some meetings in different restaurants and cafes both parties agreed to deliver the bribe at the garage of a hotel.
The bribe was delivered with some CID personnel watching from a hidden place and all the events were recorded based on a prior approval from the Public Prosecution. Accordingly, the two men were caught red-handed. in action. The officers also gave witness at the court about what had happened, Arrayah added.
