A so-called “trading and contracting” firm has allegedly duped several people with promises of securing them jobs in leading organisations in Qatar.

Those running the company, which used to operate from a building on Al Jaziya Street, Wakrah, have reportedly “disappeared” after tricking many expatriates into paying hefty sums, it is learnt.

The company, whose main operator is said to be a South Asian expatriate, told the aspirants that they were recruiting personnel for local companies as well as supplying manpower for a number of firms.

Some of the victims who paid the “registration and other charges”, as demanded by the firm, told Gulf Times that the person behind the “operation” was able to convince his victims of his "true intentions". One of the victims said he tried to convince him that his wife would get the job she had applied for. He is planning to lodge a complaint with the police.

According to him, the office was managed by a middle-aged South Asian woman, who reportedly studied in Wales. The victim repeatedly tried to contact her but she had apparently switched off her phone after the closure of the office.

The company also claimed it supplied house maids and took money from people, promising to bring domestic workers from different Asian countries, it is learnt.

Sources said the firm operated from a room inside the office of a construction firm on Al Jaziya Street. When some of the “victims” approached the office, which had apparently sublet its space to the “trading and contracting” firm, their staff said several others who had been “duped” by the company had also contacted them. The staff claimed they had no whereabouts of the “trading and contracting” firm’s employees.

Unconfirmed reports said scores of workers the firm had supplied to various construction companies are also in trouble.
