HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani has called for a separate item related to fighting corruption and establishing the rule of law as a goal within the proposed new Millennium Goals on the agenda of the United Nations summit, which is set to adopt a development plan.
In a message to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, HH the Emir called for this issue to be an independent goal as part of the UN-set goals to highlight the actions taken to fight corruption and application of the UN - related mechanisms to reduce the phenomenon.
This came to reflect the Emir’s keenness on supporting the fight against corruption as well as supporting the rule of law and promoting transparency at various levels in order to contribute effectively to the achievement of sustainable development goals, including the Millennium Goals.
The message was handed over by the Attorney General HE Dr Ali bin Fetais al-Marri, who is also the UN Special Advocate for fight against corruption, in a meeting with Ban Ki-moon, in New York on Thursday.
Since 2005, the State of Qatar has been leading international efforts in the promotion of the rule of law and the fight against corruption, where it had hosted the World Summit of Attorneys General and organised the Third Conference of States Parties to the UN Convention on the fight against corruption. At the convention, the participating countries had adopted the Doha Mechanism which noted that states should review each other in the implementation of the convention.
The UN chief said after the Doha conference, countries have become obliged to abide by the contents of the convention and Doha review mechanism.
In collaboration with the UN, Qatar has established the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Centre at the regional and international levels. A similar centre was also set up in Dakar, Senegal, to support the efforts of African countries in the fight against corruption.
