The peak summer demand of the electricity in the country exceeds 7,000mw, Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) President Issa bin Hilal al-Kuwari told Gulf Times yesterday.
“The current power generation in the country has exceeded 8,700mw,” he explained on the sidelines of a meeting convened to announce the agreement to set up a 2,520mw power plant in Umm Al Houl on the southern side of Qatar.
Stating that with the complete commissioning of the latest project, the power generation would exceed 11,000mw, al-Kuwari said the country has surplus electricity and is in a position to supply it to the GCC neighbourhoods in the event of an emergency.
“However, the local consumption is growing at a steady pace,” he added.
Nebras Power CEO and Qatar Electricity and Water Company business development director Khalid Mohamed Jolo said the annual growth in power consumption in the country is between 8 and 10% in recent years.
“This is much larger when compared to other countries of the region and elsewhere, he said while deliberating on the massive power plants that was set up in the country in the last six to seven years.
“While Ras Girtas on the northern Qatar has a capacity of more than 2,740mw, Mesaieed power project on the southern side has an installed capacity exceeding 2,000mw,” he recalled.
