An internship competition run by Maersk Oil Qatar has seen an “overwhelming response” from university and high school students, according to a statement.
The Future Leaders Internship is part of the company’s “commitment to equipping young people with the experience, skills and confidence to lead in the future”. So far, more than 200 students have entered the competition, say the organisers.
Maersk Oil Qatar is offering 10 “bright young stars of the next generation” the opportunity to win an internship that will also include the chance to meet its managing director, head of Qatarisation and the corporate social responsibility team to gain real insight into the operations of an international oil company and their own career potential.
Sheikh Jassim bin Saud al-Thani, head of Qatarisation at Maersk Oil Qatar, said: “Our Future Leaders Internship competition has clearly struck a chord with students, who’ve responded in droves through www.FindYourPlace.qa. We are also very grateful to the Supreme Education Council and universities in Qatar for their support. We encourage students who haven’t applied yet to not miss this opportunity.”
Through career advisers and social media channels, the internship has been supported and promoted by Qatar University, Hamad Bin Khalifa University, Texas A&M University, Georgetown University, Northwestern and Carnegie Mellon University.
Mohamed al-Ramahi, a senior at Texas A&M University, said the opportunity to meet with senior management is a “great way to bridge the gap between students and management at the top of the hierarchy”. Referring to the training, he said “it is very important to have a mix of theoretical and practical training, which is what this internship offers”.
The competition supports Maersk Oil Qatar’s goal to attract and develop the brightest and best local students so as to enable them to become the leaders of tomorrow in the energy industry. Maersk Oil Qatar has more than 600 employees from all over the world working in a variety of fields. This gives the winning students the opportunity to be mentored and share knowledge with specialists in the energy industry. In the last five years, the number of Qatari employees has doubled and the company aims to quadruple that number by 2017.
For a chance to win one of the internships on offer, students are asked to write a paper between 500 and 1,000 words, in English or Arabic, on the impact of the oil industry in Qatar. The deadline of the competition is 3pm on May 31 and papers should be submitted on www.findyourplace.qa
