The fourth Traditional Pearl Diving and Fishing contest (Senyar) concluded yesterday at Katara - the Cultural Village.
The closing ceremony was attended by a large number of people, including family members, relatives and acquaintances of the participants, according to a statement.
Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim al-Sulaiti, general manager of Katara, commended the enthusiasm of the participants numbering about 800. The competitions were held over four days, reviving a key aspect of the lifestyle of ancestors. The organising committee announced the names of winners in five categories.
The first-place winner in the pearl diving category was Amr al-Hamad (QR100,000), while the winning team in the diving and oyster collection was Lafan (QR400,000). The winning team for catching the largest fish was Balhambar (QR100,000), with the Al Nawajiza team winning the first-place award (QR400,000) in the fishing competition. In the angling category, the organising committee gave away prizes for 15 winners, with the top team bagging a prize of QR200,000.
A portion of the fish caught during the event was distributed among the public that attended the closing ceremony, while another part was given to local charities for distribution among needy families.
