Aspetar, through the Healthy Lifestyle Programme, is launching its 2015 Step into Health (SIH) campaign in malls this year, aiming to help Qatar’s community remain fit despite the summer heat.
By offering opportunities for physical activities performed indoors, this year’s campaign promises to motivate the community to walk more and experience the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, according to a statement.
The objective of this initiative is to engage the people of Qatar in a self-managed lifelong programme based on a moderate amount of  healthy activities daily. It aims to encourage each person to walk 10,000 steps and more a day in a non-competitive, recreational and social way.
Under this campaign, Health Promoting Malls will offer people a range of opportunities for physical activities indoors as well as a comfortable walking environment.
According to global and local standards, the minimum daily requirement of physical activity is 30 minutes, as a single period or three periods of 10 minutes each. According to the individual’s target (for example, weight loss), the total weekly workout period could be doubled.
The SIH team will manage health events for the public in collaboration with the following malls on the dates shown: Hyatt Plaza, April 25, City Center Doha, May 2, Ezdan Mall, May 16, and Lagoona Mall, June 13.
The SIH team already supports the Hyatt Plaza Walking Club, created in 2013, by making the last Saturday of each month a day of health activities with Aspire Active instructors and health measurements by Aspetar nurses. The newly-founded Ezdan Mall Walking Club, also supported by SIH, will be launched on May 16 at the public health event.
All activities will be overseen by health professionals and supported by student volunteers from the Sport Science Department of Qatar University, all dedicated to increasing the number of participants desiring to improve their healthy lifestyle through physical activity.
