Winners of the Qatar University (QU) sixth Gasna Competition were announced at a closing ceremony held recently.
The competition, which is an initiative conducted annually by the organisation’s Gas Processing Centre (GPC), drew the participation
of more than 300 students and teachers from 100 independent and international schools, and included over 80 projects.
This year’s competition was sponsored by Qapco, Dolphin Energy Limited, ExxonMobil Qatar, RasGas, ConocoPhillips Qatar and Qatargas.
Attending the ceremony were QU College of Engineering dean Dr Rashid Alammari, GPC director Dr Mohamed Almarri, ExxonMobil Qatar environmental researcher Nayla al-Naema, Dolphin Energy Limited director of public and government relations Ajlan Eid al-Enezi, ConocoPhillips research scientist Eman al-Shamari, Qapco head of academic affairs department Abdulrahman Sultan Aldarweesh, RasGas process engineer Hamad al-Bunain and Qatargas corporate social responsibility officer Rand Agha.
Winners in the first category (KG-Grade 4) were Halimah Al Saadiah Independent School for Girls (first), Newton International School, D-Ring (second) and Hajar Primary Independent School for Girls (third).
The second category (Grade 5 and 6) winners were Brooq Primary Independent School for Girls (first), Jawaan Bin Jassim Model Independent School for Boys (second) and Al Khanssa Primary School for Girls (third).
Al Yarmook Preparatory Independent School for Boys won first place in the third category (Grade 7-9), followed by Osama bin Zaid Preparatory Independent School for Boys (second) and Umm Maabad Preparatory School for Girls (third).
The fourth category (Grade 10-12) winners were Ali Bin Jassim Bin Mohamed Al Thani Secondary for Boys (first), Al Khor Prep/Sec Independent School for Girls (second) and Umm Ayman Independent Secondary School for Girls (third).
Winners of the Incentive Award were Al Falah Primary Independent School for Girls (KG-Grade 4), Al Huda Primary Independent School for Girls (Grade 5 and 6), Abdurrahman Bin Jassim Preparatory Independent School for Boys (Grade 7-9) and Amna Bint Wahab Independent Secondary School for Girls (Grade 10-12).
In his remarks, Dr Alammari said: “This national competition is one of several community service activities and outreach programmes conducted by the college that engage students in innovation and creativity in science and engineering.”
Qapco vice-chairman and CEO Dr Mohamed Yousef al-Mulla said, “Qapco is proud to be associated with Gasna, a great initiative that aims to increase children’s understanding about the importance of gas and gas processing for the economy and future of Qatar.”
On his part, ConocoPhillips Qatar president Gary Sykes said, “The annual Gasna Competition allows us to reaffirm our commitment to Qatar and its future generations through extending our support in bringing another generation of young Qatari youth closer to their country’s key industry.”
Meanwhile, al-Naema said: “ExxonMobil Qatar is delighted to have found an ideal partner (QU), as we work to provide the energy that drives human potential and ultimately fuels progress.”
Dolphin Energy Limited general manager Adel Ahmed Albuainain said, “Dolphin Energy takes pride in sponsoring and mentoring the young engineers, our future leaders. We congratulate everyone involved and wish them success.”
Agha added, “As part of our corporate social responsibility programme, we have been supporting this competition for the past few years and are impressed by the fact that our efforts are paying off really well.”
