Attorney General of Qatar Dr Fetais al-Marri has lauded the efforts being made by the UN and its agencies in recovering the money looted by previous rulers of the Arab Spring countries.
Dr al-Marri lauded the UN initiatives while speaking at a session on the “Role of the UN in conflict zones” at the 13th UN Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice yesterday.
While recalling the steps initiated by the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in the whole issue, he specially recalled his presence at the inauguration of the ‘Rule of Law and Fight against Corruption Centre’ during the first conference on recovering loot funds in Doha in 2012.
The centre has been set up in collaboration with the United Nations and Qatar has donated $10mn in support of the case.
The Attorney General said the centre has helped the Arab Spring countries and some funds were recovered, and a number of lawyers, prosecutors and the judiciary officials from the Arab Spring countries were trained to recovering the money.
Also speaking, Executive Director for the United Nations Office on Drug and Crime (UNODC) Yuri Fedotov said his organisation is relying on the support from such nations as Qatar and would strengthen co-operation with member countries.
The executive director reminded the gathering of the role being played by the UN in post-conflict situations notwithstanding its limited resources.
Fedotov said the member states have repeatedly highlighted the crimes resulting from terrorism and drugs and also showed how it affected development in many countries over the years.
