Al Jazeera has announced that it will host the International Press Institute’s (IPI’s) World Congress in Doha from April 30 to May 3, 2016.
The International Press Institute is a global network of editors, media executives and leading journalists, dedicated to the furtherance and safeguarding of press freedom, protection of freedom of opinion and expression, promotion of the free flow of news and information and improvement of the practices of journalism.
In a signing ceremony between Al Jazeera and IPI, Al Jazeera’s acting director-general Dr Mostefa Souag said: “As part of our ongoing commitment to press freedom, Al Jazeera is delighted to be hosting this milestone event alongside our colleagues at IPI. It’s especially important that this event will be held in the Middle East as this is something that will help further the cause of press freedom and improvement of standards in the region.”
The 2015 IPI World Congress will be held in Yangon, Myanmar, from March 27 to 29. Previous congresses have been held in Cape Town, South Africa (April 2014), Amman, Jordan (May 2013) and Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago (June 2012).
The Al Jazeera Media Network is one of the largest media organisations in the world, with more than 4,000 highly experienced journalists from 70 nationalities, according to a statement. Established over 18 years ago, Al Jazeera is a network of more than 10 channels and divisions with over 70 bureaus worldwide.
