The Ministry of Economy and Commerce (MEC) has closed a shop selling home appliances at Doha Industrial Area for two weeks as it had on display electric heaters that do not comply with the approved standards in the country.
The action was taken during a campaign conducted by MEC inspectors on retailers to seize counterfeit and non-standard products. They spotted 71 non-standard electric heaters at the shop. Samples of the products were sent to the General Authority for Specifications and Standardisation where lab tests affirmed that the heaters were not compliant with the approved safety standards and could cause severe harm to life and damage to property.


Firm ordered to reconduct raffle draw
The Ministry of Economy and Commerce (MEC) has ordered a company to re-conduct a raffle draw after the firm’s employee won a motorbike which was offered as the prize.
The company violated article number 7 of the ministerial decision number 19 for 2009 regarding regulations of raffle draws, which bans the outlets’ owners, partners, and staff and their spouses and close relatives from participating in such promotions.


Suzuki recall
The Ministry of Economy and Commerce has announced a free recall campaign for Suzuki SX4 hatchback made during June 2009 and November 2012, due to a defect in the safety mechanism of the transmission gear selector.
The campaign is conducted in co-operation with Teyseer Motors company, the distributor of Suzuki vehicles in Qatar.


Qatar-Saudi bilateral ties reviewed
Speaker of Saudi Advisory Council Dr Abdullah bin Mohamed bin Ibrahim al-Sheikh met Qatar’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Sheikh Abdullah bin Thamir al-Thani in Riyadh yesterday. They reviewed bilateral relations.

Qatari-Indian Business Forum to be held tomorrow
The Qatari-Indian Business Forum will be held tomorrow in New Delhi. It is organised jointly by Qatar’s Ministry of Economy and Commerce (MEC) and the Indian Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
The Qatari delegation headed by HE the Minister of Economy and Commerce Sheikh Ahmed bin Jassim bin Mohamed al-Thani will include Qatari businessmen, executives of major companies and senior government officials.
The forum aims at further enhancing economic ties between the two countries and creating new investment opportunities.

Qatar condoles Singapore’s first PM
Qatar expressed its condolences to the government and people of Singapore yesterday on the death of Lee Kuan Yew, the country’s first prime minister.  
Qatar praised Yew’s legacy and his wisdom that led to the prosperity of modern Singapore.

Advisory Council holds meeting
The Advisory Council held its weekly session chaired  by its Speaker HE Mohamed bin Mubarak al-Khulfaifi.
The council reviewed a draft law organising private schools and another draft law organising the practice of educational services and decided to refer them to the Cultural and Information Affairs Committee for report.
The Council also reviewed a draft law amending some provisions of the custom law issued by Law No 40 of 2002 and decided to refer it to the Financial and Economic Affairs Committee.
Meanwhile, the Advisory Council’s Internal and Foreign Affairs Committee met yesterday under its rapporteur Mohamed Abdullah al-Sulaiti.
The Committee completed a study on a draft law amending some provisions of the traffic law issued by Emiri Decree No 19 of 2007. The draft law was returned to the committee by the Advisory Council for further study.
Separately, the Advisory Council’s Legal and Legislative Affairs Committee also met yesterday under its rapporteur Rashid Siraiya al-Kaabi.
The committee studied a draft law amending some provisions of decree law No 17 of 2010 regulating the National Human Rights Committee and decided to furnish a report to the Advisory Council.

Tunisian minister meets Qatari envoy
Tunisia’s Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development Nejib Derouiche met Qatar’s Ambassador to Tunisia Abdullah bin Nasser al-Humaidi in Tunis yesterday.
They discussed aspects of bilateral co-operation and means of promoting them.

Doha to host GCC Red Crescent  meeting
The scientific committee to activate the teaching of humanitarian work at the GCC Red Crescent Societies will hold its first meeting in Doha on Monday.
The committee will discuss the proposals on the overall perception of activating the teaching of humanitarian work, and sum up and evaluate the training programmes implemented by each society in order to prepare a comprehensive vision about activating the teaching of humanitarian work as a diploma or academic programme in order to cover the need for specialist cadres in this field.
The committee will review the recommendations to be presented to the 10th meeting of the GCC Red Crescent Societies Presidents, scheduled to be held in Doha in April 2015.

Court hears case of fraud by bank employees
A Doha court is hearing a case of three bank employees who were able to transfer QR10mn from the account of a client to their private account, local Arabic daily Arrayah reported.
The accused withdrew the amount using a cheque and divided the amount.The fraud was discovered only after the owner of the account reviewed the transactions. The withdrawal of the amount was facilitated by a bank employee, the daily added.

Rains cause nearly 510 minor accidents
Around 510 minor road accidents took place at various places in the country on Sunday due to the heavy rains, local Arabic daily Arrayah reported yesterday.
Most accidents were attributed to the carelessness of motorists and also for not maintaining sufficient distance from other vehicles.
