Minister of Energy and Industry HE Dr Mohamed bin Saleh al-Sada has appealed to the residents to rationalise the use of water and help the future generations lead a better life with adequate reserves of water for their consumption.
The minister said this in a statement issued on the eve of the World Water Day, which is observed today (March 22).
The World Water Day coincides with the GCC Conservation Week starting today.
While acknowledging the support extended by the country’s residents to the ongoing ‘Tarsheed’ campaign of the Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) aimed at preserving and conserving water and electricity, the minister expressed the hope that the misuse of water and electricity would be considerably reduced in coming years. As part of the campaign, the annual consumption of water and electricity is expected to be reduced by 35% and 20% by 2017, compared to the figures of 2012 when the five-year campaign was launched.
Dr al-Sada said the World Water Day reminds one of the vitality and necessity of water on the Earth.
Water, he said, is related to civilisation, economic growth, and development for a better future. The World Water Day sheds light on the importance of water and how it contributes to sustainable development.
The minister said Qatar, under the wise leadership of HH The Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani is committed to supporting all activities and initiatives for the provision of sustainable water resources.
“Tarsheed goes in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030 which aims at transforming Qatar into an advanced country, capable of sustaining its own development and providing for a high standard of living for all its present and future generations,” he said.
In another communique, Kahramaa President Issa bin Hilal al-Kuwari also highlighted the necessity of preserving the country’s water resources.
Kahramaa, he said, endeavours to provide sustainable and high quality services as per the highest health, safety, and environment standards within a comprehensive strategy for the integrated and sustainable management of the country’s water resources.
